About the winemaker

“Vine growing has been in the von Oetinger family since 1828, but it wasn’t until 1966 that Robert von Oetinger laid the foundation for what would later be called Weingut von Oetinger. When I took over the winery, I decided to break with tradition. Instead of making wines with residual sugar, I wanted to show that dry wines are fantastic. At first, the other farmers laughed at me, but the press and sommeliers were soon enthusiastic. That’s when I knew my choice was the right one.”

93/100 James Suckling
Impressive balance of generous body, structure and freshness with ripe mirabelle, quince and herbal notes. The velvety tannins give the long finish a lot of complexity. Made for long aging.

Riesling is the most sought-after grape in Germany, perhaps even in the world. This grape can be included in the arsenal of any experienced sommelier. This grape knows how to combine a dose of mouth-filling fruit with top-notch acidity to lift many dishes to a higher level. This is a top-class Riesling and falls under the VDP classification under the name 'Erste Lage'. These are the real premium Riesling wines, in which you can really taste the specific terroir of Rheingau. Grapes for 'Erste Lage' wines are always picked by hand and often come from a single vineyard. These types of wines can be compared to, for example, a Premier Cru in Burgundy. In addition, you also have the "GG" (Grosses Gewächs), comparable to grand cru. 80% of Achim's values have this status. As a result, he downgrades some of his wines, to show that he wants to create an accessible style.
