About the winemaker
"The Treggiaia label is inspired by a tree that was once typical of the Chianti landscape: the field maple, which was used in Tuscany to train the grapevines. The use of trees to support grapevines was already known in Etruscan times and was mentioned in documents from Roman times. The Latin poet Catullus described the close relationship between the two plants as a marriage, and this cultivation technique is still known as "vigna maritata"."

Tuscany and the Sangiovese grape are inextricably linked. Sangiovese literally means 'blood of Jupiter,' and it is the number one quality grape of Tuscany. The grape naturally has high acidity. With the many hours of sunshine it receives on the sandy clay soils of Tuscany, it produces a wine with balanced flavors. Ruby red in color, with spicy, jammy fruit and a pleasant freshness. The addition of French grape varieties dates back to the 1970s and 1980s when winegrowers became frustrated with the local wine authorities. They wanted more freedom to express their creativity and began using grape varieties other than the traditional indigenous ones. This was reinforced when farmers started blending varieties like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for their top wines. In 1992, the wine authorities finally relented with the establishment of the IGT system (a quality designation). This gave the farmers more freedom in their winemaking methods.
