About the winemaker
“We make this Pulignano as a tribute to our environment. We make this wine from our oldest vineyards from the local Sangiovese grape. These vineyards were planted long before I was born, in 1968. They are old, but certainly not worn out. They supply by far the best grapes from our vineyards. Then making wine from it in our 17th century wine cellar makes it extra special.”

Toscane, Italy
Tuscany and the Sangiovese grape are inextricably linked. Sangiovese literally means 'blood of Jupiter' and it is the number one quality grape in Tuscany. The grape naturally has a high acidity and because of the many hours of sun that it receives on the sandy clay soils in Tuscany, it produces a wine with balanced flavors. Ruby red in color, spicy, jammy fruit and pleasantly fresh. The addition of French grape varieties dates back to the 1970s and 1980s when vintners became frustrated with local wine authorities. The farmers wanted more freedom to express their creativity and sought other grape varieties than the previously common native varieties. This was reinforced by the fact that farmers started blending grape varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for their top wines. In 1992, the wine authorities finally decided to introduce the IGT system (a quality indication). This gave the farmers more freedom in their way of working.
