About the winemaker

“Legend has it that during the Ottoman invasion in 1552, Hungarian soldiers drank dark red wine to give themselves courage while defending Eger Castle from the Turkish siege. The bloody red wine stains on their clothes and faces gave rise to rumors among the (totally abstinent) Turks: The Hungarian soldiers were drinking bull’s blood to gain power, hence the name ‘Bikavér’.”

A harmonious blend of dark berries, plums and vanilla spice with supple tannins and a burst of juicy acidity. Engaging and typical.

Szekszárd, Hungary
This historic wine region of Szekszárd, in the south of Hungary, is an hour and a half drive from Budapest. The rolling landscape full of vineyards offers views of the famous Danube River and the dramatic Alföld Plain. Wine growing here goes back, how could it be otherwise, to Roman times. For example, a marble sarcophagus from the 1st century was found in this region, which is already richly decorated with images of wine growing. Even during the Ottoman rule in the 16th century, wine was allowed to be grown here. Unique because the Ottomans were Islamic.
