Puente del Ea Rioja Blanco

Rioja, Spain
Chardonnay, Viura
For winemaker Julien, tradition and innovation go hand in hand. For example, he does mature his white Rioja in oak barrels, but he goes for a wine full of energy, freshness and tension. In this way, he makes a real modern classic.

About the winemaker

Years ago I was on my way to an annual dinner with friends. When I noticed that I would arrive very early, I decided to take a detour. I ended up on a road towards a small town, where the silhouette of an old castle stood out. This decision was almost like a source of inspiration. The town was Sajazarra. The surroundings surprised me: a succession of hills and hills covered with vineyards, under an atmosphere of Atlantic influences. Then I knew: this is where I have to make wine.”

92/100 - Wine Enthusiast
Aromas of peach, dried apricot and almond set the stage for nectarine, Granny Smith apple, dried thyme and jasmine flavors. Vivid acidity, good mouthfeel and a hint of croissant on the finish make for a pleasing pour.

White Rioja is not often seen. Usually you get full red wine from this beautiful area in Northern Spain. Most white Rioja is made from viura. Winegrower Julien also decided to plant a little Chardonnay. With this he wants to provide the wine with a pleasantly round body, without affecting the typicality of the region. The Rioja is the most famous wine region in Spain. The bodegas are often large and mainly focused on producing full red wine with a fair amount of (excessive) wood use. However, innovation can also be discovered more and more often between this tradition. Julien is one of those young guys who successfully does it completely differently.
