Parajes Del Valle Monastrell Ecológico

Jumilla, Spain
Monastrell
To make such a fresh red wine in hot Jumilla, Maria picks her grapes just before they are fully ripe. Defiantly Spanish from an adventurous winemaker, gently earthy and bursting with fresh red fruit.

About the winemaker

“I deliberately broke with the traditional Spanish style. Although those wines can also be very enjoyable, I don't make heavy red wines with extended oak aging and rich vanilla aromas. I choose to let the fruit speak for itself. I harvest the grapes extra early and use stainless steel and concrete vats for fermentation and aging to preserve freshness to the fullest. My aversion to extravagance is also reflected in my label; the wine speaks for itself.”

“Oogt als een fundamentalistisch natuurwijn. Kale fles. (vintage 2020)

Jumilla, Spain
Jumilla is a small wine region south of Valencia. The monastrell grape is one of the few that can thrive in Jumilla's warm climate. In Jumilla, the grapevines are pruned as bush vines, small shrubs where the canopy acts like an umbrella. Generally, monastrell wines are deep, powerful, slightly smoky, with lots of black fruit and a touch of spiciness. By harvesting the grapes early and fermenting them in cooled vats, Maria creates a light monastrell that might remind you of a robust pinot noir or zweigelt.
