About the winemaker

“As a child I helped out at my parents’ winery. Together with my mother I used to plant vineyards. If I could, I would still do all the work in the vineyards myself. Because only by standing in the vineyards every day do you get a feel for the vines, the vintage and ultimately the end result; the wine.”

Although the Goričko region has a centuries-old wine-growing tradition, it was for a long time a bit of a neglected child of Slovenian wine-growing. Historical, cultural circumstances and the isolated location meant that the wines were hardly drunk outside its own region. In the 1960s, there were only a few vineyards to be found. The vineyards that were left were planted with varieties that were very popular in the United States, of course there were exceptions such as in the village of Mačkovci. Here, the traditional Blaufränkisch, Sauvignon Blanc, Silvaner and Welschriesling were still planted. Even in the 1980s, when Slovenian wine-growing underwent an enormous quality boost, this region remained a blind spot. It was not until 2007 that entrepreneur Stane Polanič, together with winemaker Uroš, started Marof winery here of all places and slowly but surely woke up this sleeping beauty.
