Priorat, Spain
One of the smallest wine-growing regions in Spain is Priorato (or Priorat in Catalan) and is located west of Tarragona. In a relatively short period, from the 1970s of the last century, the wines from this region have become the most acclaimed in the world. The unique microclimate, but especially the unique soil 'llicorellas' (famous granite soils), are responsible for this. The base of the soil consists of reddish and black slate and contains small particles of quartzite. The top layer consists of broken slate and mica and is about 50 cm thick. The roots therefore have to go deep into the ground in search of nutrients, water and minerals. This explains the concentration and minerality of the wines that come from here.
