On this small piece of land I could do my own thing without having to take into account the style of someone else's winery. This piece of land soon turned out not to be enough. Villany, Hungary
The Villany wine region in Hungary is located in the southern part of Transdanubia, close to the border of Croatia. It is known as one of the most dynamic and resilient areas in the country. Viticulture in Villany dates back to Roman times, after which the region was completely destroyed under Turkish rule. After this, viticulture started to get going again, and slowly but surely the planting of vines started again. Surprisingly, it was German settlers in 1740 who really boosted wine growing in this region. The Portugieser grape they brought with them was the lifeblood of the region for many years. Nowadays it is the grape varieties from Bordeaux that predominate here. For example, the Cabernet Sauvignon from this area is now also very popular internationally.
