About the winemaker

“The oldest wine lands in the Netherlands? The slopes of the Wijngaardsberg in Ulestraten, Limburg! As early as 968, there were vines here, along the Roman road from Meerssen to Hunnecum. The vineyards existed until 1800 and in 2002 they returned. It soon became clear why people chose this particular spot for wine growing in the past. This region now has the climate of Dijon, the capital of Burgundy, in the 1970s. Warm enough for fine wine.”

The Romans already knew it, monks in the Middle Ages also knew it, we are now rediscovering it: South Limburg is made for wine growing. The climate, the slopes, a soil that seems to come straight from Champagne or Burgundy. The ideal conditions for making wine! The soil here is unique in the Netherlands: the top layer consists of loess with the world-famous marl underneath. Loess was deposited by the wind after the last great ice age, is nice and airy, warms up quickly and is considered one of the best soil types for wine growing. The calcareous marl ensures fresh acids and tension in the wines. The hilly landscape in Limburg also ensures the right exposure to the sun. With global warming, wine growing in South Limburg has a future.
