About the winemaker

“I bought a small estate in 2010 with 60 hectares of old, native vines. We renovated the estate into a modern winery, but we certainly also have an eye for the traditional aspect! For example, I harvest my grapes manually, I only use native grape varieties and wild yeasts for the wines and I let the wine mature for 6 months in oak barrels for extra body and complexity.”

"An explosion of blue and red fruit with a lovely grassy minty kick and lift of tobacco; structured and complex with smooth, chalky tannins and a long finish."

“Mid to deep cherry red. Brooding dark-red fruit, quite savoury and not as expressive as I expected but it probably needs a bit longer in bottle. Much more lively fruit on the palate and quite a grip to the tannins, plenty of juicy freshness. For the moment at least, this definitely needs food, though I think it will become more mellow with another six months in the bottle."

The biggest risk to wine growing in Alentejo is the heat in July and August. They therefore harvest early in August to prevent the grapes from becoming overripe and therefore mainly use native grapes that can withstand a blow. For this wine these are aragonez, trincadeira and touriga nacional. The aragonez, known in Spain as tempranillo, produces wines with less acidity and tannin than elsewhere in Spain or Portugal. Trincadeira, which ripens early, does have that tannin and also gives the wine its hint of eucalyptus. The touriga nacional is a grape with a lot of character and intense flavors and is seen as Portuguese answer to cabernet sauvignon; powerful and full.

Stevige aardse wijn. Donker rood fruit als zwarte bessen en tikje kruidnagel. 14% alcohol en dat proef je.

Zeer zachte en soepele wijn met met veel body maar toch voldoende frisse citruszuur en verder kruid(nagel)ige houttonen
