About the winemaker

The village of Ábalos is located in the shadow of the Sierra de Cantabria, between high limestone rocks. If you reverse Ábalos, you get Solabal (plus the 'L' as the Spanish article). We started Bodega Solabal in 1988 and since then we have been trying to turn Rioja upside down. We break with the style of excessive maturation in American oak barrels and try to reflect the character of the terroir in our wines.

8,5
8,5/10 Punten - De Grote Hamersma 2020
"Mooie, maar gelukkig niet al te rustieke Reserva. Daarom geen oude theemeubels, de geur van een te warme woonkamer in een bejaardentehuis of een kringloopwinkel. Fors in het houten toch behoud van fruit. Veel en vol. Kersen op sap en gewelde pruimen. Mokkaboontjes. Brosse bittere chocolade. Eikenzoet en zonneschijn."

Rioja, Spain
The Spanish tempranillo is the backbone of many red Rioja wines. This grape is small and ripens early, hence its name tempranillo (temprano = early, and –illo = the Spanish diminutive). This 'little early' produces ripe wines with an average tannin structure, lots of red fruit and herbs. The young, unripened wines fall under the name 'Joven'. Riojas with at least 12 months of wood maturation and at least 12 months of cellar maturation fall under the name 'Crianza'. This Rioja 'Reserva' must be aged for at least 1 year in oak and 2 years in the cellar. At Solabal they opt for 24 months in the barrel and another 18 months in the bottle.
