Bodega Pardelasses Priorat Les Clivelles

Priorat, Spain
Carinena
Wines from Priorat are among the absolute best in Spain. Lots of sunshine and low yields make for concentrated grapes. The famous soil of granite and quartz gives the wine its exciting minerality.

About the winemaker

“Winemakers in Priorat are strange guys, everyone in Spain knows that. In the 1970s, many 'wine hippies' settled here, using dynamite to create terraced vineyards in this inhospitable area. With the help of my family, I started Bodega Pardelasses in 2005. So you can't really call me a hippy. Well… we work completely organically and only want the best for our vines and mother nature. That can also be called hip.”

"Single varietal of Carinyena (Carignan) from their own vineyards. Vines were planted between 1985-98 at 350m elevation, on llicorella soils. Fermented with wild yeast. Aged in chestnut and French oak barrels for nine months. Organic. Production of 1,800 bottles. Family-run winery since 2005. Tasted blind. This a powerful wine. Extremely youthful, showing a fusion of currants, prunes, and super-dark berries. The nose is exuberant and sweetly scented. It is on the very sweet side. Smooth and jammy texture, convincing and broad palate."

Priorat, Spain
One of the smallest wine-growing areas in Spain is Priorato (or Priorat in Catalan) and is located west of Tarragona. In a relatively short period of time, from the 1970s onwards, the wines from this area have become the most acclaimed in the world. The unique microclimate, but especially the unique soil 'llicorellas' (famous granite soils), is responsible for this. The base of the soil consists of reddish and black slate and contains small particles of quartzite. The top layer consists of crushed slate and mica and is about 50 cm thick. The roots therefore have to go deep into the soil in search of nutrients, water and minerals. It explains the concentration and minerality of the wines that come from here.
