Montecucco is a unique part of Tuscany. It is located in the warm southern corner of this region, near the famous Brunello area. It is also home to Monte Amiata, the second-highest volcano in the country. The history of viticulture in Montecucco dates back centuries, as the Romans had already realized that the volcanic soil and specific climate of the area were ideal for growing wine. However, the region only received official recognition in the 1990s. In 1998, Montecucco was granted DOC status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata), and in 2011, it was upgraded to DOCG status (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita), the highest recognition in Italian winemaking.
