About the winemaker

“While the typical Vinho Verde wines have been produced for centuries, at Aphros we decided to embark on an entirely new path. We were among the first in this large region to embrace biodynamic practices. We also craft several wines without the use of machines, even for pressing. As if that wasn't enough, we also experimented with winemaking techniques, utilizing not only stainless steel tanks but also concrete tanks to preserve even more freshness. Although there might have been initial skepticism from other producers, the international wine press was quickly convinced of our approach."

“Delightfully scented but not OTT: citrus, spring blossom, lightly herbal – the bayleaf referenced in the variety name (Loureiro means 'laurel') becomes more obvious as the wine warms in the glass. And even so a stony note that makes it more than just a pretty aroma. On the palate, again, beautifully scented and intense without overpowering you with perfume, and there's piercing lemon and lime fruit purity. High acidity but in balance to give a long and mouth-watering finish, with a very slight creaminess in the texture to counterbalance the crisp flavours in the mouth. One of the most piercing and elegant varietal Loureiro wines I can remember.”

Vinho verde, Portugal
The Vinho Verde region, stretching from the Minho River in the north to Porto in the south, is Portugal's largest wine region. It's essentially a collection of various small sub-regions. Aphros is located in the Lima sub-region, which boasts a variety of microclimates. While there's a significant influence from the Atlantic Ocean, there are also more temperate areas higher up in the mountains. Although Lima traditionally features many red grape varieties, the loureiro grape is well represented here as well. It's in the areas where the ocean's influence is strongest that this grape variety truly shines. Aphros demonstrates that wines made from this grape aren't just suitable for casual sipping; they aim for a complex and layered expression.
